MCP guide: connect Phone.inc to your AI assistant

Busy day? Connect your phone system to your AI assistant, and you can check calls, read voicemails and change your setup just by asking. It takes about two minutes to set up, and from then on you can skip the clicking around.

Why it helps

You already use your AI assistant for email and planning. Once your phone system is connected too, it can answer questions about your calls and change your setup for you. A few things you can ask:

  • "Who called while I was in a meeting from 10 to 12?"
  • "Summarise yesterday's calls and tell me who I need to call back."
  • "Did anyone leave a voicemail about an order today?"
  • "We close at 3 pm on Fridays from now on. Update our opening hours."
  • "Who is +45 12 34 56 78?"
  • "Text this customer back and say we'll call them tomorrow morning."

You get the answer in a few seconds, in plain language, and you don't have to open the app. Read more on our MCP page.

What MCP is

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant connect to other tools. Here, that tool is your phone system.

What you need

  • An account with us and at least one business number. New here? Start with the Quick-start guide.
  • An AI assistant that supports custom MCP connectors, for example Claude or ChatGPT.
  • Our MCP server address: https://app.phone.inc/mcp

It works on every plan, Free and Pro.

How to connect

In Claude

  1. Open Claude and go to Settings, then Connectors.
  2. Choose Add custom connector.
  3. Give it a name, for example "Phone.inc", and paste https://app.phone.inc/mcp as the URL.
  4. Save the connector.
  5. Click Connect on the new connector. A browser window opens.
  6. Log in with the user you use in our app, and approve access.
  7. Start a new chat, check the connector is switched on, and ask something like "Who called me today?"

Using Cursor or an API key? See MCP for developers.

In ChatGPT and other assistants

The steps are pretty much the same in any assistant that supports custom MCP connectors:

  1. Find the place to add a connector or app in your assistant's settings. The name and location vary between assistants and plans.
  2. Add a new custom connector with https://app.phone.inc/mcp as the server URL.
  3. Log in with the user you use in our app when asked.
  4. Make sure the connector is switched on in your chat, then ask your first question.

Can't find the option? Check your assistant's own help pages for "custom connector" or "MCP". Some assistants only offer it on certain plans.

What your assistant can do

Your assistant can help with your calls, voicemails, contacts, team and call routing. Here's what you can ask for:

AreaWhat you can ask for
CallsFind and search calls by number, date or topic. Read the transcription and summary of a call. See who answered and if it came in outside opening hours.
VoicemailsList new voicemails, read them as text, and clean them up.
InboxSee unseen calls, voicemails and texts in your Inbox, and the full history with one number.
Callers and contactsLook up who a number is, including info from connected tools such as Shopify, Dinero, Attio or your own Custom Endpoint. Add, edit or remove contacts.
TextsSend a text from your business number and set up an automatic reply outside opening hours, when texting is turned on for your company.
Call routingChange who gets calls during and outside opening hours, what happens when no one answers, your phone menu and your greetings. See Call routing.
Opening hoursChange your weekly opening hours.
TeamInvite, edit or remove employees, manage departments, and turn do not disturb on or off, also for a set time.
Other settingsManage shared text snippets and webhooks, start moving an existing number to us, and get the setup link for an integration.
Live callsHelp with a warm transfer to a colleague while you're on a call.

What it can't do

  • Make a phone call for you.
  • Record your voice. Greetings set through your assistant are read aloud by one of our voices. If you have a recorded greeting, a new text greeting replaces it.
  • Finish an integration setup for you. It gives you a link, and you finish the login in your browser.
  • Set special opening hours for holidays. Change your weekly hours instead, and set them back afterwards.
  • Change your plan or billing. Do that on the billing page. See Free vs Pro.
  • Send picture messages (MMS). Texts are plain SMS for now.
  • Use features you don't have. For example, texts only work when messaging is turned on for your company.

Safety and control

You stay in charge:

  • It checks with you first. Your assistant is told to confirm with you before it changes call routing. It also needs your clear OK before it closes a number or moves a number to us. For other changes, like editing a contact or deleting a voicemail, your assistant's own approval prompts are your check, so keep them switched on.
  • Changes are live right away. A new routing setup applies from the next call. Read the summary your assistant shows you before you say yes.
  • Texts are real. A text sent by your assistant goes to the customer and is charged like any other text.
  • It only sees your company. The connection is tied to the user you log in with, so your assistant only sees your company's data.
  • You can disconnect at any time. Just remove or switch off our connector in your assistant's settings, in the same place you added it.
